The Course of Experimental Infection of the Chick Embryo with the Virus of Equine Encephalomyelitis

چکیده

The titration curve for the virus of Eastern equine encephalomyelitis inoculated into the 10 day old chick embryo shows that the maximum increase in virus content continues until shortly before the generalized destruction of the embryo is apparent. This is followed by a stationary phase. Histological studies of infected embryos fail to demonstrate selective tissue destruction, and titrations show the virus to be distributed throughout the egg, although concentrated in the embryo. The chorioallantoic membrane gradually becomes increasingly resistant with age to both the Eastern and Western viruses. Increased resistance with age is also apparent in the hatched chick. These findings are based on the use of the chick embryo itself as the test animal to determine the 50 per cent mortality end-point. The limits of accuracy of this method are defined.

Pathogenesis of Venezuelan Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus Infections in the Developing Chick Embryo.

Although the Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus is readily cultivable in the developing chick embryo (Beck and Wyckoff, 1938; Kubes and Rios, 1939; Gallo and Vogelsang, 1939), no studies appear to have been made on the rate of propagation or distribution of this virus in the embryo, as has been done by Higbie and Howitt (1935) and by Bang (1943) for the Eastern and Western equine viruses...

The Maturation of Western Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus and Its Release from Chick Embryo Cells in Suspension

Experiments are presented in which the plaque assay technique was used to study the intracellular appearance and release of Western equine encephalomyelitis virus in suspensions of infected chick embryo fibroblasts. No intracellular virus could be found during the 1st hour after adsorption in spite of the fact that more than 10(14) cells per ml. proved to be infected. This is taken to indicate ...

Depression of Anaerobic Glycolysis of Embryonic Tissue by Western Strain of Equine Encephalomyelitis Virus. Prevention of This Effect by Specific Immune Serum

Studies were made on the effect of mixing the Western strain of equine encephalomyelitis virus (W.E.E.) and embryonic tissue on the rate of anaerobic glycolysis of the tissue. Whole chick embryo, chick embryo from which brain and spinal cord had been removed, and embryonic skeletal muscle were employed. 1. W.E.E. virus depressed the rate of anaerobic glycolysis of embryonic tissues within 2 day...

Spontaneous and induced mutagenesis in Western Equine encephalomyelitis virus in chick embryo cells with different repair activity.

Evidence was obtained indicating differences in the survival rate of Western equine encephalomyelitis virus after exposure to ultraviolet radiation and methyl methanesulfonate in commercial and leukosisfree chick embryo cells that differed in repair activity. The levels of spontaneous mutagenesis (on the basis of the yield of small palque variants of the encephalomyelitis virus) did not essenti...
